Several athletes/teams recorded notable performances in various competitions last week.
In the 2011-2012 Marianas Interscholastic Girls Basketball League, the MHS Dolphins capped a perfect season after beating Saipan Southern High School in the finals at the Northern Marianas College Gymnasium. The Lady Dolphins went 6-0 in the regular season and were also undefeated in the double-round-robin playoffs.
In the last leg of the Northern Marianas Athletics Cross-Country Series, Hopwood Junior High School and Saipan Community School showed force anew in their respective age group races.
In the Tsunami Swim Circuit Series 2 at the Kan Pacific Swimming Pool in Marpi, Tsunami Saipan’s Lukas Kang had record-breaking swims in the boys U8 100m butterfly and 50m breaststroke, while teammate Angel Tan crushed the CNMI age group mark (11 to 12) in the 50m backstroke.
In the 3rd Annual Tan Holdings Tennis Classic, many-time CNMI player Todd Montgomery led Week 1 winners of the annual competition. Joining him on the champions list were singles participants Lydia Tan, Thea Minor, Nina Engelhardt, Jake Lee, Moris Villanueva, Raj Rai, and Alina Ishikawa, and doubles players Lydia Tan and David Lai, Ryan Cho and Nageo Chieko, and Boyet and Theecel Minor.
In the 2011 Boys and Girls FA Cup (co-ed U12 and girls U15), Paire and MP United’s boys U12 teams drew first blood, ousting Tan Holdings FC U12 and Matansa FC U12, respectively.
Still in football, NMIFA had its fall football festival for the U6, U8, and U10 age group at the Koblerville Elementary School.
In the Mt. Tapochao Thanksgiving Day Turkey Trot Fun Run, Keum Bai Ji notched back-to-back titles in the men’s division, while Mieko Carey took the women’s plum she last won in 2007.
Other ongoing competitions on Saipan continued with the Shirley’s caging completing its playoff cast. Making the list are Mobil, DFS Galleria, Fiesta, Pacific Islands Club/NVM, PSS/McGraw-Hill, Shirley’s, Grillin’, and Hyatt. Wushin and GPPC were eliminated.
In the 5th Annual Traders Insurance Badminton Team Tournament, Saipan Badminton Club took the lead after Week 2 against the Berks Badminton Club, TAGA, Golden Racquet, and Shirley’s BC.
In the Men’s FA Cup, Inter Godfather’s and Wild Bill’s still hold the lead in Pool B and A, respectively.
