Local holiday arts and craft show on Sunday in Susupe
Island artists will be hosting a holiday arts and crafts show this Sunday, Oct.12, from 8am to 5pm at the Pedro P. Tenorio Multi-Purpose Center in Susupe.
Leaf-print paintings, pandanus leaf weaving, hats, head flowers, and mwar mwars will be featured with holiday items, stocking stuffers, birthday gifts, and pre-order crafts for sale.
“We want to provide the CNMI people and tourists our products that we do locally as artists. We want to promote these works and encourage our young generations to know that this is who we are and what we are,” said Tokie Mojica, one of the artists involved in the project.
The show will also have Jill Arenovski, Flower Sablan, Ernie Davis, Mark and Tammy James, and Nevis Camacho—all of whom are registered artists on island, according to Mojica.
Mojica, who has been handcrafting on island for 17 years, said the event will host an array of cultures from the Marshalls, CNMI, United States, Samoa, Philippines, and Fiji.
“Regardless of our different backgrounds, we all connect and unite with our work, “ she said.
If the event, sponsored and organized by the artists themselves, is successful, there would be more like this throughout the year, Mojica said.
She said the group may form an organization to better get what they do out there if successful.
“We strongly feel our art is dying. Hopefully young people can learn from us and carry on our traditions. We are asking for the public to come and support us. We can’t do it without their help,” she said.
