Lion’s club walkathon fundraiser draws hundreds

A lot of the Saipan community woke up early to participate in the 2nd Annual 5K Walkathon Fundraiser of the Saipan Marianas Lions Club yesterday, Nov. 17, 2019, along Beach Road, as part of the commemoration of Diabetes Awareness Month this month.
This year’s fundraiser will benefit the Diabetes Prevention & Control Program of the Commonwealth Health Care Corp.’s Division of Public Health.
A total of 260 walkers registered and participated, which started with a 15-minute aerobics session, courtesy of FitBeat.
The walkers and runners started hitting the pavement on Beach Road at 6am, from the Carolinian Utt to just before Monika’s Gallery near Quartermaster Road, and back to complete the 5K distance.
Representatives of DPCP were on hand to give free blood pressure and blood sugar checks, and advised participants on what health signs to guard against.
As one of Lions Club International’s global causes, #We Serve to reduce the prevalence of diabetes and improve the quality of life for those diagnosed.
The fundraiser was also supported by the Saipan Alliance Lions Club, Saipan Centennial Lions Club, Saipan Fil-Am Lions Club, and Saipan Unity Lions Club.
