After three weeks of being on top, Leina Kim settled for a joint third place finish in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) #2 Tournament on Tuesday at the Bookcliff Country Club in Grand Junction, Colorado.

Kim and the 99 other golfers who teed off at the 18-hole par-71 had a tough two days at the Henry Hughes-designed golf course as no one shot an under-par round.

Tournament winner Hale Dunn of Dixie State University finished with a 5-over 149 (74, 75) for a three-shot win over Angelo State’s Ashley Bartholomew, who had an 8-over 152 (77, 75).

Kim, who a week ago reset her own scoring record of 142 by firing 133 at the Coldwater Golf Club in Phoenix, Arizona, ended up four shots back for third place to tie ThunderWolves teammate Julie Sanchez and Cha Cha Willhoite of the Metro State University Roadrunners.

Kim, according to the CSU-Puebleo ThunderWolves website, carded a 77 and 76 while Sanchez had rounds of 79 and 74, and Willhoite fired 78 and 75 for a 9-over 153 total. Kim and Sanchez were at sixth and 13th places, respectively after the opening day. CSU-Pueblo rookie Megan McCutcheon and Danielle DuPont rounded up the ThunderWolves’ scoring a 187 and 188 each.

Allie Johnston (Metro State, 10-over 154); Taylor Walters (Colorado Mesa, 11-over 155); Britney Bisgrove (Dixie State, 12-over 156); Alex Darwin (University of Colorado Colorado Springs, 13-over 157), Nathalie Gallacher (Metro State, 13-over 157) and Leah Meza (Angelo State, 13-over 157) completed the Top 10 finishers.

In the team standings, Dixie State led from the opening round and ended up with a 53-over 629 for a five-shot win over second placer Metro State. The runner-up team shot a 58-over 634 to edge Angelo State’s 59-over 635. CSU-Pueblo was 26-shots back to place at solo eighth. The ThunderWolves had rounds of 334 and 321 for a 79-over 655.

Western New Mexico (67-over 643), Colorado Mesa (68-over 644), Adam State (74-over 650), UCCS (74-over 650), Montana State-Billings (86-over 662), and Dominican (91-over 667) completed the Top 10 finishers in the team event.

Meanwhile, Kim and the rest of the Josh Koschke-coached Lady ThunderWolves will compete in their last fall tournament this year at next week’s West Texas A&M Lady Buff Invitational in Amarillo, Texas. The 36-hole tournament will be held at the La Paloma Golf Course in Amarillo from Oct. 6 to 7. (Jon Perez)
