The 2014 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) is only on its third week but this early Leina Kim is showing signs that she wants to flex her muscles and dominate the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division II golf tournament.

Kim fired a pair of 33s to finish first in the opening round of the Western New Mexico University-hosted Mustang Women’s Fall Intercollegiate on Monday afternoon at the Coldwater Golf Club in Phoenix, Ariz.

The 22-year-old Kim’s first round 6-under 66, according to the Colorado State University (CSU)-Pueblo ThunderWolves website, shattered her own conference-best mark of 67, a feat she accomplished just a week ago.

The Marianas Baptist Academy alum fired a 5-under 67 in the first round of the Colorado Christian Invitational at the Raccoon Creek Golf Course in Littleton, Colo. on her way to winning her second straight title.

Kim fired seven birdies, parred 10 holes, and had one bogey in the first round.

But the CSU-Pueblo junior needs to play steady in the final round if ever she wants to win a third straight tournament crown as St. Mary’s University Texas bet Allison Howarth is just two shots back.

Howarth could challenge Kim for the tournament title since the Rattlers’ rookie is just two shots back at 4-under 68 entering Tuesday’s final round.

Lauren Kruszewski is another title contender after the Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University Eagle standout opened with a 3-under 69.

But Kim’s fiery form in the first round failed to rub off on her teammates as the ThunderWolves are currently in eighth spot with a 302 or nine shots behind leaders St. Mary’s.

Sonoma State University (295), California Baptist University (296), Western Washington University (297), Adams State University (298), Colorado Mesa University (299), and Point Loma Nazarene (300) are all ahead of CSU-Pueblo.

CSU-Pueblo senior Julie Sanchez limped with a 5-over 77 to land tied for 38th, while rookie Samantha Geisick posted a 6-over 78 for 50th place.

ThunderWolf sophomore Natasha Navarro recorded one of the six eagles in the first round, a three on the par-5 18th. She, however, ended the round with a 9-over 81 for 67th spot, while freshman Megan McCutcheon finished the scoring with a 14-over 86 for 80th place. (Jon Perez)
