Lawmakers troop to Kristo Rai church for Aldan memorial
Lawmakers of the 19th Legislature trooped to the Kristo Rai Parish on Tuesday morning to give their final respects to former Northern Islands mayor Tobias Aldan.
Members of the House of Representatives, Senate, and Lt. Gov. Ralph DLG. Torres, representing the Governor’s Office, took turns in giving their respective plaques of appreciation and offering their condolences to the family members of the former mayor.

Mayors, delegates, and representatives of Tinian, Rota, and Saipan also came to present their own commemorative plaques.
Aldan passed away last March 16 at the Commonwealth Health Center at the age of 68.
A House commemorative resolution was also given to the family of the former Northern Islands mayor conveying “the sincere condolences and sympathy of the House of Representatives to Aldan on the occasion of his untimely passing and paying tribute to his services to the people of the Commonwealth.”
The resolution also pays tribute to the life and legacy of Aldan, fondly called “Mayor Toby.”
Aldan served as mayor of the CNMI’s northernmost municipality from 2010 to the end of his term in 2014. Born on Feb. 9, 1947, Aldan grew up on an island that was still recovering from a war that changed both the geographic and social landscape of the Northern Marianas.
Aldan’s desire to serve his islands “led to a 37-year career in government service, including working for the Department of Public Works, and as public relations officer for the Northern Islands Mayor’s Office, a department he himself would eventually oversee.”
His son, Francisco Jerome K. Aldan, currently sits as mayor of Northern Islands.
