Laniyo pitches Boleros past Papa Bears

J.J. Laniyo pitched four scoreless innings to lead the Boleros to a 17-2 crushing of the Papa Bears in the Masters division of the Saipan Baseball League last Friday night at the Francisco M. Palacios Baseball Field.

Laniyo gave up only two hits with a strikeout, and a walk before being relieved by Steve Igisaiar at the top of the fifth. Laniyo also had two brilliant defensive plays against the Bears—a throw to shortstop Mark Toves to tag Mike Muna and end the first inning, and a 1-3 play against Nick Deleon Guerrero for the second out in the fourth.

On offense, the Boleros flexed their muscles by scoring seven runs in the second and five each in the first and third to win the shortened game.

George David went 2-for-3 to lead the Boleros’ 13 hits against the Papa Bears’ bullpen composed of starter Don Pangelinan, Nick Guerrero, and Greg F. Camacho. David also had a run and an RBI double in the fourth, allowing Gus Pangelinan to reach home, while the latter went 2-for-4 and had two doubles.

Gus Pangelinan had an RBI double in the first and later scored one of his four runs on a John Taitano RBI double.

Mark Toves went 1-for-3, including a two-RBI single in the first to bring in James Fleming and Justin Reyes, who reached on a Guerrero pitching error and a single, respectively. Reyes had an inside-the-park home run in the second to go with his two runs and two singles, including an infield single in the third.

The Papa Bears got on the scoreboard at the top of the fifth, courtesy of Henry Lizama and Muna.

Lizama led off the fifth, getting on base on a Gus Pangelinan error at third base and moving to second after Igisaiar hit Carlos Camacho by a pitch before scoring off a Julian Salalila error.

The Boleros got then got the first out when Toves threw to Salalila to tag Carlos Camacho at second base. Muna got on base on a fielder’s choice in that play, moved to second on a Jojo Attao single, and advanced to third when Igisaiar walked Greg F. Camacho. Lizama, with the bases loaded, came in as a pinch runner for Attao.

Muna scored on an RBI walk by Nick Reyes to again load up the bases. However, the Boleros stranded the Bears’ runners in an inning-ending double play with John Maratita grounding out to Toves, who threw to Sallila at second base. Salalila beat Nick Reyes at the bag then made the relay throw to David Kapileo at first base to get Maratita.
