(Walter Cepeda Sutherland)  Saipan Southern High School’s Marrielle Gariguez led the Lady Manta Rays to a 3-0 shutout win over Kagman High School’s Lady Ayuyus during last Thursday’s game in the Marianas Interscholastic Sports Organization Girls Soccer League at the Oleai Sports Complex Field.

The win improved Southern’s win-loss-draw record to 2-1-1 for second place in the standings. Kagman fell to a 1-2-1 slate and hopes to bounce back on Tuesday when it faces the Marianas High School Junior Lady Dolphins (0-0-3) at 4:30pm.The Lady Dolphins’ varsity squad leads the four-team field with an unbeaten record in four games.

Gariguez broke the ice with her first goal just five and a half minutes after the kickoff and later netted another goal in the 18th minute of the first half.

KHS fended off the Rays’ attack for about 15 minutes in the second frame, but Gariguez eventually found another breakaway off a cleared-out ball from midfield and bagged her third goal for the hat trick. Gariguez went top shelf after setting herself up in the left corner.

KHS never came up with an answer in the second half, but did manage to keep the Rays at bay for the remainder of the contest.
