Lady Geckos take opener over Lady Ayuyus

(Walter Sutherland) The Lady Geckos of Saipan International School started their Marianas Interscholastic Sports Organization girls high school basketball season with a 40-31 victory over the Kagman High School Lady Ayuyus on Tuesday at the Marianas High School Gymnasium.

Amber Roberts paced SIS with eight points in the opening 10 minutes to help her team build an early 13-9 advantage.

Roberts then added eight more in the second period to single-handedly put SIS ahead, 21-17, at halftime.

KHS’ Elilai Pialug mustered seven points for the Lady Ayuyus in the first half.

Pialug led a rally with six points in the third quarter to put the Lady Ayuyus in front by a bucket, 27-25, heading into the fourth and final quarter.

SIS’ shooters went cold after the break and were limited to just four points in the period.

SIS’ Zoe Jewell then found her rhythm in the clutch with eight markers to go with Roberts’ six points as SIS ran away with it in the end.

SIS’ defense stuffed KHS to just a pair of baskets in the final period.

Roberts led the field with 22 points, while KHS’ Pialug managed 13 markers in the loss.

The season continues tonight at the MHS Gym at 4:30pm with MHS hosting Saipan Southern High School in a junior varsity duel, followed by the varsity pairing at 5:30pm.

 – Roberts 22, Jewell 12, Bracken 2, Frink 1, Huokino 1.

KHS 31
 – Pialug 13, Dela Cruz 6, Ada 4, Jetley 4, Rasa 4

 13-9, 21-17, 25-27, 40-31.
