(Walter Sutherland) Saipan International School Lady Geckos dismantled the Saipan Southern High School Manta Rays, 77-54, in their Marianas Interscholastic Sports Organization girls basketball matchup Tuesday at the Marianas High School Gymnasium.

SIS notched its second win in five games, snapping a three-game losing streak, while gaining a game on SSHS (3-3) in the standings.

The season concludes today with undefeated MHS (5-0) taking on Kagman High School (1-3) at 5:30pm preceded by the schools’ junior varsity matchup at 4:30pm. SIS played KHS yesterday.

SIS jumped out to an early 16-12 lead in the opening 10 minutes. Abby Hudkins paced the Lady Geckos with six points in the period, while SSHS’ Roxanne Duenas buried a couple of late 3-pointers to keep the Lady Rays at bay.

SIS then jumped ahead, 34-17, at the half as Zoe Jewell and Amber Roberts tallied six markers apiece in the second quarter. SSHS was limited to just a handful of points in the period.

SSHS tried to ignite a rally in the third quarter, but SIS remained on the attack and preserved a 52-38 margin heading into the final period.

Duenas came alive with a string of 10 points in the third quarter to finish with 16 in the period, but the game remained out of reach, as she only received five points from her teammates.

Meanwhile, SIS’ Phalai Frink came off the bench and scored six points to keep the Lady Geckos in control.

Duenas scrambled for 10 more points in the final period, and although she finished with a whopping 37 points, SIS neutralized her effort with strategic teamwork.

SIS players did a great job finding open teammates and their shooting percentage was through the roof during the entire second half. SIS also out-rebounded the Lady Rays and played stiff, clean defense throughout the match.

Jewell and Ashley Chun combined for 15 points in the clutch to keep the pressure on the Lady Rays.

Jewell led the Geckos with 19 points. Notably, every SIS scorer finished in double digits.

SIS 77 – Jewell 19, Roberts 18, Hudkins 16, Chun 14, Frink 10.

SSHS 54 – Duenas 37, Joseph 6, Lizama 5, Bartolo 2, Libunao 2, Santos 2.

Scoring by quarters: 16-12, 34-17, 52-38, 77-54.
