Marianas High School's Lily Williams goes for a reverse layup against a Saipan International School defender during their varsity game in the MISO caging last Wednesday at the MHS Gymnasium. (Walter Sutherland) The Marianas High School Lady Dolphins moved a win away from having a perfect regular season after routing Saipan International School, 53-24, last Wednesday in the penultimate game in the varsity division of the 2011-2012 Marianas Interscholastic Sports Organization Girls Basketball League at the MHS Gymnasium.

The Lady Dolphins improved to a 5-0 record in the double-round robin regular season for first place in the four-team field, while SIS ended up with a 2-4 record. With its undefeated record, MHS, which was scheduled to play its last game yesterday against Kagman, is the hands down favorite coming into the double-elimination post-season tournament, which is set from Nov. 18 to 19. The Nov. 18 matches will take place at MHS starting at 1pm, while the Nov. 19 games will be moved to the Northern Marianas College Gymnasium and will begin at 8am.

The Lady Dolphins shot out of a cannon after the tip and amassed a 24-2 lead in the opening 10 minutes. After their impressive victory over Saipan Southern High School last Tuesday, the Geckos were contained to one basket in the first quarter.

Jaime Mendoza led the MHS in the opening canto with her seven points, while Jeraldine Castillo and Lia Rangamar chipped in six apiece.

In the second period, Nicole Arboliras came of the bench and contributed six points, as the Lady Dolphins trudged ahead, 38-5.

MHS eased up after the break, but remained well in control heading into the final stanza, 46-18.

SIS’s Amber Roberts mustered eight points in the third quarter, but the other Geckos struggled against the Lady Dolphins’ feisty defense.

Castillo led MHS with five points at crunch time as the Dolphins cruised to an easy win.

Castillo finished with a game-high 15 points, while Roberts managed eight in the loss.

MHS 53 – Castillo 15, Mendoza 11, Abrams 8, Arboliras 6, Rangamar 6, Lizardo 4, Williams 3.

SIS 24 – Roberts 12, Jewell 8, Hudkins 4.

Scoring by quarters: 24-2, 38-5, 46-18, 53-24
