An improbable deflection by Kagman High School’s backfield awarded the Marianas High School varsity Lady Dolphins (MHS1) a 1-0 victory as the Marianas Interscholastic Sports Organization’s girls soccer regular season came to a close Thursday at the Oleai Sports Complex Field.
The win capped off an undefeated season for last year’s reigning champions. Aside from five wins, the team also had a draw this season.
KHS did a good job holding off MHS1’s aggressive front for the majority of the contest, but the Lady Dolphins’ relentless attacks eventually led to a goal caused by a deflection of a KHS defender in front of the net.
MHS1 was already locked into first place in the standings coming into the match, and even with a win, KHS would have ended up in third place because of the tiebreaker rule from a loss to second ranked Saipan Southern High School (3-1-2), however KHS almost spoiled the Lady Dolphins’ flawless season if the former was able to force a draw.
At any rate, even with assistance to secure the sweep, MHS1 displayed yet another impressive performance this season and are easily the heavy favorites coming into next week’s playoffs. In six games the varsity Lady Dolphins tallied up 16 goals and allowed only one against them.
KHS fell to a win-loss-draw card of 2-3-1 just behind the SSHS Lady Manta Rays, while MHS’ developing junior varsity squad (MHS2) finished 0-0-6; four teams made up the field.
The single-elimination playoffs will start Friday next week at 2pm with MHS1 taking on MHS2 followed at 3:15pm by SSHS taking on KHS.
Then the next day on Saturday, the third place consolation match kicks off at 9am followed by the championship main event at 10:30am.
The winner will be presented with the MISO girls soccer championship trophy.
