Shoji Kuroda bested over 40 individuals, submitting the fastest run time during the March Saipan 5K Underground Race held last week in Marpi.
Kuroda, a Food and Beverage assistant manager at Grandvrio Saipan, completed the 5K race with an impressive time of 19:18.
Completing the race just a little over two minutes after Kuroda was Kuu Nishimura who submitted a time of 21:44.
Rounding up the Top 3 was Sam Culp who came in at a close third with a time of 22:20.
According to Edward Jr. Dela Cruz, event organizer, the 5K Underground Race provides a fun challenge for the community to look forward to every year at no cost.
“It is to get people to go out and be active and promote cardiovascular activity. I didn’t make it purely competitive. We will honor the Top 3 fastest times but other than that, there are no categories,” he said.
Dela Cruz said he was inspired by the Saipan International School’s Run the Marianas event and that was the goal for the Underground Race.
According to Saipan Tribune archives, Kuroda was chosen as Northern Marianas Sports Association’s Male Athlete of the month after he took first in the 6th Saipan Aquathlon 5km run, 1km Swim, and 2.5km Run held last Feb. 27 at Pau Pau Beach.
Kuroda continuous to train and dedicate himself to various sporting events across the CNMI. Kuroda is known for his friendly, respectful, and courteous personality.
