Kudos to GPPC
GPPC has graciously dredged the boat ramp on the north side of Sugar Dock during the past few weeks. You can easily see how much material was removed as you drive along Beach Road. Why was this necessary? It’s because the currents on the west side of Saipan largely run north to south along the shore causing the sand to build up against the north side of the dock and making it impossible to launch or recover boats at the ramp. Left as it is, this sand removal will always need to be done. It was an expense born by GPPC this time and I’m grateful. Otherwise, we, the public, have to cover the cost each time the dredging is required.
Consider this alternative: Sugar Dock is in desperate need of rebuilding both for the sake of safety and its continued use by the public and tourists alike. Mr. Max Aguon, who has been the volunteer caretaker for this area for years, would like to see the dock restored for the reasons mentioned above. When the dock is repaired (and we hope that’s in the very near future!), why not build another boat ramp, but this time, on the south side of Sugar Dock. Done this way, the south boat ramp will remain useable 12 months a year. And, in the meantime, the north boat ramp will become clogged with sand to become the perfect beach for families with newborn infants and the very young!
Just a thought. Check with Max on his expert point of view. And enjoy our beaches.
