The WOW05 Summer Camp from Korea visited Saipan Mayor David M. Apatang to ask him a few question about the island and himself.

The camp, established in Korea, seeks to help elementary, junior high, and high school students develop their English speaking and writing skills.

The group, composed of 19 students and teachers—had a lively discussion about Saipan and Apatang himself.

A couple of the students asked about about Apatang’s way of life and he answered them as best and as honestly as he could.

Other students were curious about the crops that are grown on Saipan and about recent development here.

Apatang shared with the students that the island is abundant in mangoes, coconuts, breadfruit, and many other fruits and vegetables. He recounted that Saipan has just opened its first casino and that is the most recent development the island is currently facing.

Other students asked him about the struggles he has faced in his four years in office and the projects he and his staff have completed.

According to Apatang, his biggest struggle in his four years as mayor was in the aftermath of Typhoon Soudelor in 2015. That was when he was really tested and he believes that with the help of his staff and the community, the entire island of Saipan was able to slowly get back on its feet.

He also proudly told the students about the Island Flower project he and the Marianas Visitors Authority are spearheading. Apatang told the students that the project is currently in the works but if they return with friends and family, the island will be covered with flowers and it will be even more astonishing than it already is.

He encouraged the students to come back with their family so that the trip is more memorable, and they too can witness the beauty of the island.

With the help of Yeon Tea Choi, who is currently housing the visitors, Apatang also presented the students with certificates for completing the camp.
