Get ready, kite lovers. Brilliant Star School will once again host the 5th Marianas Winds Kite Festival & Cultural Food Fair.
The Marianas Winds Kite Festival & Cultural Food Fair is a family-oriented festival focusing on the kites and cuisines from around the world.
This year’s event is slated for March 10, from 10am to 3pm, at the American Memorial Park central ball field.
School principal Richard Sikkel said the kite contest will feature three main events.
Purchased kites will be competing for the Most Whimsical, Most Beautiful, and Largest Kite awards. Under the Hand Made category, there will be winners for Most Original, Most Beautiful, and Smallest Kite.
Both purchased and hand-made kites will be competing for the Highest Flying and Longest Tail kite awards.
“Winners in each category will receive a trophy donated by Topnotch and other cool prizes,” Sikkel told Saipan Tribune.
Those who want to enter their kites for the various contests will be required to fill out a registration form and pay a non-refundable registration fee of $5 per kite and per category. The fee is payable in cash or check to Brilliant Star School.
The registration form can be downloaded from www.brilliantstarmontessori.org.
A single kite can be entered in all categories but can only win one award. Competing kites should be on a minimum of 10 feet of line for a minimum flight time of 5 minutes. Fishing lines are not allowed as kite string.
Brilliant Star School will be selling at their office on Navy Hill behind the baseball field kites in various colors, shapes, and designs priced from $8 to $20.
“We selected this year’s kites for their ease of flying. These kites should do well in all condition,” said Sikkel.
Competitors are requested to check in at the kite contest booth by noon to test their kites before the start of the contests.
There will be other activities for the public to enjoy such as arts and crafts, games booths, and face painting, among others.
“Be sure to bring the whole family, a chair to sit in, and your kite/s,” added Sikkel.
Early registration is encouraged and is accepted via email to principal@brilliantstar.org or fax to 323-7828. For more information, call 323-STAR (7827).
