The King of the Diamond Labor Day Softball Tournament got going last Sunday with 10 games on tap at the Capitol Hill Ballfield.

One of the highlights of Day 1 of the return of the boys of Summer was the game between Homies and Kliq with the latter prevailing in a score of 11-9.

Other results last Sunday saw Mwekmwekid over Olek Prim, 24-13; Asahi over Saipal, 10-3; Sufa over Titang, 7-1; Angels over Asahi, 24-8; Pues OK 4Nate over Peneinei, 21-19; Cornboys over TMac, 10-0; and Boys Klal over Toka Hao, 15-9.

The tourney continued Monday with Asahi getting the better of Olek Prim, 26-11; Mwekmwekid beating Saipal, 9-8; and Toka Hao walloping TMac, 19-2. Tuesday’s scores then saw Asahi win over Peneinei, 16-12; Titang overcome Mwekmwekid, 18-11; and Homies advance with an 18-7 over the Comets.

Shayne Villanueva, whose Roil Soil Marketing is holding the Labor Day tournament, is pretty satisfied how the King of the Diamond tournament has unfolded so far.

“We are very happy with tournament play. Last night (Tuesday) saw the first teams eliminated. We are happy the weather is keeping its course,” he said.

Villanueva also alluded to baseball players showing up for the King of the Diamond, considering baseball action on island has been dormant for the good part of the past two years already. “There are a mix of baseball players and softball players.”

Aside from the actual softball games, a home run derby and a cornhole tournament will also be held. According to the internet, cornhole is a lawn game wherein players take turns throwing 16-ounce bags of corn kernels at a raised board with a hole in the far end. A bag in the hole scores 3 points, while one on the board scores 1 point. Play continues until a team or player reaches or exceeds the score of 21.

Prizes for the King of the Diamond Labor Day Softball Tournament is $1,000 plus a set of 12 uniforms for first place, $750 for second place, $500 for third place, and $350 for fourth place. It is sponsored by Budweiser, AllStar Sporting Goods, Power 99, and Marianas Variety. For more information, call Ikluk Masayos at 287-7979 or Villanueva at 285-4269.
