Delegate Gregorio Kilili C. Sablan (Ind-MP) has launched the 2021 Congressional App Challenge. Every year, Sablan invites middle school and high school students to participate and showcase their technological design and coding skills. Students may compete individually or in teams of up to four by registering online at http://www.congressionalappchallenge.us/. Submissions are due November 1, 2021, and winning entries are displayed in the U.S. Capitol for one year.

“The App Challenge is a way for Congress to encourage students across the nation to bring their app ideas to life and hone their skills in computer science and coding,” Sablan said. “And with school out, summer is a great time to learn how to code or develop existing coding skills.”

Sablan hosts the Congressional App Challenge annually. Last year, 14 teams in the Marianas competed.

Short for “application,” an “app” is software that can be run on a variety of devices for different purposes, such as entertainment, health monitoring, or enhancing work performance.

Participants may create any type of app they like and on any platform, as long as it is original, appropriate, and is functional to some degree. Submission requirements include a registration form, app description, a 1-3 minute video demonstrating what the app does and how it works, and an exit questionnaire.

The 2020 winning app, “SRC,” was designed by Marianas High School students Carson Lin, James Lin, Jun Du, and Jie Du. Their winning demo video can be viewed at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5SfTcnhOlng&feature=youtu.be.
