Delegate Gregorio Kilili C. Sablan (Ind-MP) invites middle and high school students in the Northern Mariana Islands to submit essays for his first-ever Asian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month Essay Contest. A panel of local judges will select two winning essays—one from a middle school student and one from a high school student—for publication in the Congressional Record of the U.S. House of Representatives.

“May is Asian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month—a time to celebrate the voices and contributions of Asians and Pacific Islanders nationwide,” Sablan said. “Young people in the Northern Marianas carry with them unique experiences, and their stories of growing up in the Marianas shape who they become later in life. I hope that this contest can be an opportunity for them to let their thoughts and stories be heard, so that we, as one community, can learn from them too.”

The essay competition is free and open to all middle and high school students. Students have until 5pm on Friday, May 23, 2021, to submit their essays via an electronic form link on Sablan’s website. Middle school students should submit an essay 300-500 words in length. High school students should submit an essay 500-750 words in length. This year’s prompt is:

The Northern Marianas is home to many different cultures within the Asian and Pacific Islander community. Tell us about how API identity, culture, and community has impacted you, and what we can do as one Marianas community to best celebrate and respect the diversity in our islands.

Sablan will present winners with a framed copy of their essay as published in the Congressional Record, the official record of proceedings of the U.S. Congress.

Essays will be judged based on response to the topic, quality and clarity of thought, grammar and syntax, and organization and development.
