Kilili lauds choice of Muñoz to lead Domestic Policy Council
CNMI Delegate Gregorio Kilili Camacho Sablan applauded yesterday the news that President Obama has selected Cecilia Muñoz to be director of the President’s Domestic Policy Council.
Muñoz is co-chair of the Interagency Group on Insular Affairs along with Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar. She also serves as Special Assistant to the President and Director of Intergovernmental Affairs.
“President Obama has made a fine choice in selecting Cecilia Muñoz to head his Domestic Policy Council,” said Sablan. “Ms. Muñoz has been very accessible and responsive on issues related to the Northern Mariana Islands in her capacity as co-chair of the Interagency Group on Insular Affairs and as director for Intergovernmental Affairs. I look forward to continuing that relationship as she takes on her new and broader responsibilities assisting the President in executing the policies that affect all American families.”
Sablan has worked with Muñoz on health care issues and first learned that the President had agreed to support inclusion of the insular areas in the landmark healthcare reform legislation in a meeting with Muñoz at the White House.
Muñoz also helped Sablan influence the Department of Homeland Security decision to allow Russian and Chinese tourists to continue to enter the Northern Mariana Islands after the transition to federal immigration control had begun, a policy that has been critical to the Northern Marianas tourism industry.
