Kilili: Our hearts go out to Texas
Sablan
Delegate Gregorio Kilili C. Sablan (Ind-MP) called on residents of the Northern Mariana Islands to help the people of Texas whose lives have been upended by unprecedented volumes of rain, widespread flooding, and devastating tornadoes, as Tropical Storm Harvey continues to pummel the Gulf Coast.
“Our hearts go out to the more than six million people in southeast Texas who are affected by this catastrophic event,” Sablan said.
“Thousands have been evacuated; thousands more still wait for rescue. They are in desperate need of the basics right now—food, clean water, medical and hygiene supplies, diapers, clothing, shelter. And they will need help for the long haul, to recover and rebuild their lives.
“This is a disaster of historic proportions, and I urge the people of the Marianas to open their hearts to the people of Texas and give any measure of help and comfort they can.
“It was not that long ago when we experienced a major natural disaster here in the Marianas, with Typhoon Soudelor. The generous aid and compassion that poured in from around the nation helped us get back on our feet. And the people of Texas will need help getting back on theirs,” Sablan said.
According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency, people can support the relief effort in Texas by visiting the National Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster website, www.nvoad.org, to donate or volunteer with the voluntary or charitable organizations of their choice. Many of these organizations are already on the ground in Texas, assisting disaster survivors. (PR)
