Delegate George Kilili C. Sablan (Ind-MP) recently facilitated the donation of 50 boxes of books to the Joeten-Kiyu Public Library.

According to Sablan, this is a “personal project.”

“This is a personal project started in 2009. I met a teacher asking me for books I looked around at the Library of Congress, then I found in the Library a repository of excess books,” Sablan said.

He found out that publishers of authors who get an ISBN number—which the Library of Congress issues—often give three or four books to the library.

“The library keeps one copy, and the others are kept in the repository,” Sablan said.

After securing the go-signal to get the books for donation, Sablan has been conducting the book donation efforts.

“We’ve given books to the other libraries and schools at the CNMI,” Sablan said.

He said the Joeten-Kiyu Public Library’s new management also reached out for the book donation.

Long-time CNMI resident Teddy Guiao, who moved to Saipan in 1969, said he will invite other members of the man’amko to visit the library and see the extensive lineup of books.

“I will encourage them to visit,” Guiao said.

Guiao was appointed “Director for the Day” of the Joeten-Kiyu Public Library as part of the celebration of Older Americans Month/Mes Man’Amko.

According to Guiao, the “Director for the Day” is a regular program of the public library for the man’amko.

As “Director of the Day,” Guiao received the donated books in a simple ceremony.
