The 102 senior graduates of Kagman High School, which is also the school’s last class of the 1990s, graduated yesterday at the American Memorial Park amphitheater.
Class of 2017’s valedictorian and Million Dollar Scholar Kycel P. Butters is headed to Virginia’s Hollins University under a full scholarship majoring in psychology.
Butters mentioned that finishing school and obtaining a degree is at the top of her priorities.
“I am just really happy because I have been working really hard since elementary. This is the only thing I would like to do for my parents,” she said.
“I plan to come back [to Saipan] after college for sure, I am just not sure when yet,” said Butters when asked about returning to the CNMI after college.
Butters was also accepted in the University of Colorado Boulder, Colorado State University, Rocky Mountain College in Montana, and George Mason University in Virginia. She also received English, mathematics, science, Japanese, and physical education departmental content area awards as well as the outstanding female graduate award.
KHS class of 2017 salutatorian Iramhel N. Talon would be attending the Northern Marianas College this coming semester.
Talon said she plans to pursue a degree majoring in education, specifically in rehabilitation and human services.
“I like helping and guiding people,” said Talon when asked why she wished to pursue such a degree.
Talon added that she wishes to return to KHS as a counselor before thinking of possibly pursuing a doctorate in the future.
Besides being announced as Class of 2017’s salutatorian, Talon received the social studies and Japanese departmental content area awards as well.
Also honored during the graduation was Alfred N. Ngalongalo who received the Marine Corps’ scholastic excellence award and the Mayor of Saipan Community Service Award. Brittney Hamilton was also a recipient of the Marine Corps’ scholastic excellence award as well.
KHS calls the 2017 graduates last of 1990s since from here on out those graduating from the school are born in the year 2000 and up.
