Kagman High School dominated the boys 500m race of the Public School System Interscholastic Outrigger Canoe Race 2021-2022 last Saturday in the waters off Kilili Beach in Susupe.
The Kagman boys paddlers churned the water like there was no tomorrow and finished first place in the one-lap race with a time of 3:13.370. That win was worth 5 points for the Ayuyus.
Saipan Southern High School, coached by Joseph Weaver, took second about 14 seconds off the Ayuyus’ pace with a time of 3:27.04. Marianas High School, coached by Eddie Johnson, came in last with a time of 3:43.23.
In previous races last March 19 and 26, KHS came in second place both times but finally redeemed themselves by securing the top podium finish last Saturday.
The Ayuyus boys team includes Max Cruz, Aaron Arriola, Joedy Pinaula, Kenneth Kaipat, Jason Agulto, Jacoby Cabrera, Christian Achas, Sebastian Muna, Matthew Anastacio, John Mensa, and Elbert Pinaula.
KHS outrigger canoe coach Jason Tarkong said the team finally showed this weekend that they still have what it takes to defend their championship.
“All athletes competing worked hard and sharpened their skillset. The KHS men’s team came in first place on three of the four races they competed in. The Ayuyus still have some fine-tuning to do before the next and final sprint competition race of the season which will be double points,” he said.
In the men’s 1,000m race also held last Saturday, SSHS came in first place with a time of 6:46.460 and received 5 points. KHS this time came in second in the two-lap race with a time of 6:58.500 and earned 3 points, while MHS lagged behind and finished last after crossing the finish line in 8:25.010 and received 1 point.
The results of the women’s and coed outrigger canoe races will be published in the next issues of Saipan Tribune. The next race day of the PSS Interscholastic Outrigger Canoe Race 2021-2022 will be held on April 23, 2022.
