KB Market stunned Armatech, 74-68, in the first masters division match in the 2015 San Antonio Community Action Network Basketball League last Saturday night at the San Antonio court.
KB Market capitalized on a depleted Armatech crew to pull off an upset and get its third win in seven games.
Armatech played without big man Bruce Berline, allowing KB Market’s Peter Camacho to make most of his point-blanked shots. Camacho scored a team-high 21 points.
On offense, Armatech had limited options with shooter James Abuy missing the match. Martin Moreno tried to pick up the slack and had some success, as he top-scored for his squad with his 26 markers. However, fatigue caught up with him late in the fourth quarter as he missed two charities and a triple in the homestretch that could have turned things around for Armatech.
KB Market was on top by only 4, 70-66, with still 1:10 left on the clock when Moreno muffed both charities. After Moreno’ second miss, KB Market got a quick 2 points off Ed Pangelinan’s fastbreak layup to gain more cushion.
Moreno tried to retaliate, but his triple from the top key hit nothing but air. Fortunately, for Armatech, Rommel Bartolo took the offensive rebound and was fouled underneath, but he missed the two free throws, too. Another offensive board gave Armatech a third chance to score and this time Moreno cashed on it, making a bank shot to bring the deficit down to 4, 68-72, 22 seconds left in the match.
KB Market went for a quick inbound and Elias Rangamar threw a long past to Camacho, who was ahead of Haejun Park. Mike Umali joined Camacho in the fastbreak play, drawing the defense of Peter Crisostomo to the left wing and allowing his teammate to unload an uncontested layup that sealed it for KB Market.
KB Market seized control of the close match in the fourth period when it broke the 60-all deadlock and zoomed to a 70-63 advantage off Camacho’s two baskets and one apiece from Melchor Puri, Boy Garcia, and Umali. Armatech (4-3), on the other hand, was without a field goal for nearly six minutes and went 3-for-6 from the stripe before an and-1 play from Moreno ended the slump.
In the open division, Armatech (0-6) also lost to GMI Market (2-4).
Young guns Jesse and Jon Santos teamed up with Michael Cabanas in lifting GMI Market to a 78-60 victory.
The trio turned a neck-and-neck match to an 18-point winning margin after combining for 24 of GMI Market’s 29 points in the final quarter. Jon Santos scored GMI Market’s first 8 points in the fourth quarter, while Cabanas had 9 of his 15 in that period, and Jesse Santos chipped in 7. Andrew Palino scored the other 5 points of GMI Market, which was back to square one at the end of the third canto, 49-49, before pulling away in the final.
