Rick Kautz won the Saipan Golf Association Ace of the Month Tournament for July after shooting a gross 72 last July 31 at the Laolao Bay Golf & Resort west course.

The longtime Saipan businessman finished with a gross of 83 after shooting a 38 and 45 in the front and back nines. He came away with the 72 net after his 12 handicap was deducted.

Kautz’s good friend, Nick Sablan, actually fired the score to beat in the July competition with his 72 net. However, the former CNMI national golfer was ineligible to win since he already topped the March edition of the tournament.

Sablan, a 9-handicapper, had the day’s best gross score of 78 after carding a 40 and 39 in the first and last nine holes of the Kagman course.

Mariano Fajardo and Rene Batallones finished tied at third after both had identical net scores of 73. Fajardo shot a gross of 100 (50-50), but minus his 27 handicap, he wound up with a net 73.

Batallones, for his part, scored a 46 and 42 in the front and back nines for a gross of 88, which minus his 15 handicap gave him the third best net score of the month.

For winning the July monthly tournament of SGA against an 11-person field, Kautz now joins Edward C. Sablan (January), Frances M. Sablan (February), Nick C. Sablan (March), Larry I. Deleon Guerrero (April), Alex Tudela (May), and Mariano Fajardo (June) in the season-ending 2022 SGA Ace of the Year Tournament.

In the closest to the pin competition, Alex Tudela was without peer in hole No. 2. Jung Teack lorded it over in the seventh hole, while Kautz and Tony DeLeon Guerrero won in holes No. 13 and 17.

Kautz brought the lumber in hole No. 9 in the longest drive. Ditto for his golfing buddy Sablan in hole No. 18.
