‘Kantan Isla’ to be revived

After a silence of 13 years, the indigenous musical festival “Kantan Isla” will be revived.

First established on Saipan in 1998, Kantan Isla became an annual event until it was abruptly stopped in 2004.

The current Commonwealth Council of Arts and Culture decided it is about time to revive the tradition.

According to folk art coordinator Gloriana Teuira, this will bring back the art of song writing and performances, even if it is only for an evening.

“We want to motivate our youth to compose their own music in Chamorro and Carolinian,” Teuira said.

The tradition will also motivate local musicians to share their original pieces.

The music festival would be held on Sept. 29, 2017, at the Garapan Fishing Base, from 5pm to 11pm.

For more information, contact Teuira at 322-9982/83.

Teuira said the entire community is welcome to experience the joys of indigenous music.

Ten vendor slots are also open for non-profit organizations, families, and churches that want to raise funds. Tents will be provided by the council but a $25 park and recreation fee is required.
