Kanoa Resort retained its unblemished record following a 79-47 win over Lower Base, while Shirley’s made it two in a row versus Mambas, 48-44, as the regular season games in the 2016 Tan Holdings Inter-Company Basketball League continued last Friday at the Gillette Multipurpose Gymnasium.
Kanoa now has a 6-0 record to keep the top spot in the six-team field, while Lower Base fell to a 1-5 record and joined Pacific Oriental, Inc. at the bottom of the standings. Shirley’s improved its record to 3-3 for third place behind Fiesta (4-2), which defeated POI, 69-59, in the third game last weekend. Mambas is it solo fourth spot with its 2-4 mark.
Shirley’s won easily over Mambas in the first round, 55-36, but labored for the victory in their second meeting.
Isaiah Bordon and Angel Catungal teamed up for Shirley’s last 10 points to lift their team to the close win. Bordon had 6 markers in the home stretch, while Catungal added 4. John Jugos also helped Shirley’s cause as he knocked in 9 straight points early in the second half and drilled all his 12 markers in the final 20 minutes of play.
The second half started with Mambas hanging on to a 24-23 advantage behind the pair of free throws from Dennis Chan. Mambas eventually lost the shaky lead, as Jugos began to hit his outside shots and Bordon and Catungal delivered the finishing blows to hand Shirley’s its third victory.
In the second game, Kanoa had the win in the bag as early as the first half when it built a commanding 48-15 lead.
Kanoa drew points from every player it fielded in the game to pound the hapless Lower Base. Douglas Schmidt paced the league leader with his 12 points, while six of his teammates contributed at least 7 points each. William Benavente paced Lower Base with his 17 markers.
In the third match, Fiesta also established a big lead in the first half en route to the double-digit winning margin against POI.
The defending champion was up by 14 at the break, 32-18, after Arjay Nonato heated up early, nailing 12 of his 14 points in the first half.
Jarrett Matsutaro picked up where Nonato left off, logging 14 of his 16 markers in the second half to lift Fiesta to its fourth victory.
