The 21st Annual Taste of the Marianas International Food Festival and Beer Garden had its second staging this month with a barbecue whole chicken cooking competition on the secondary stage last Saturday.

The three contestants were judged on the tenderness of the chicken, how properly they were cooked, the presentation with a side dish, and the overall taste.

Inspired by her family’s secret recipe, Nataline Kaneshi used all homemade ingredients such as an orange zest barbecue sauce and a side of fresh apple coleslaw to win first place in the BBQ Whole Chicken Contest.

Kaneshi’s prize for her victory was a one-night stay at Hyatt Regency Saipan, a dinner buffet for two at Kili Cafe, and a $250 gift certificate at Chairman M. restaurant.

Second place went to the pair of Freddy Salavaria and Francis Mendiola, also known as “Da Kumpaires.” Third place went to Joseph Imperial.

The judges were Marianas Visitors Authority marketing manager Thomas Kim, Herman’s Modern Bakery assistant general manager Michael Guerrero, and 2018 Miss Marianas Celine Cabrera.

Future festival contests are the Fried Rice Eating Contest on May 18, sponsored by J’s Restaurant, and the Hotel Association of the Northern Mariana Islands Junior Chefs Competition on May 25, sponsored by Triple J Five Star Wholesale.

The festival is being held every Saturday throughout the month of May from 6pm to 10pm, at the American Memorial Park.
