Kagman, MHS varsities drub foes

Kagman High School went on a fourth-quarter scoring spree in waltzing past Saipan Southern High School, 69-52, in the 2014 Marianas Interscholastic Sports Organization Girls Basketball League last Monday at the Marianas High School Gymnasium.

Kagman, holding on to a slim 47-46 lead after three quarters, outscored Saipan Southern in the fourth, 22-6, to clinch its fourth win in seven games. Kelsey Lizama led the Lady Ayuyus’ run in the fourth frame, scoring 13 points in the payoff period.

The game was close from the opening tip with neither team leading by as much as 5 points before Kagman pulled away in the fourth.

The Ayuyus entered the second quarter with a 5-point lead, 20-15, while the Mantas enjoyed a 35-32 spread at the turn.

Lizama paced Kagman with a team-high 22 points, while Rose Jones added 9 markers. Nikela Masayos, Jollin Mettao, Natasha Ngirausui and Alisha Villagomez made 6 points each.

Jamila Alegre tallied 22 points to lead Southern’s scorers, while Veronne Babauta and Serafina Rogoyawa chipped in 9 and 7 markers, respectively. The Lady Manta Rays dropped to 3-4 and will next play the undefeated MHS Lady Dolphins varsity on Friday.

In the first game, MHS Dolphins varsity scored a 45-24 rout of its junior varsity side to improve to 5-0.

While MHS varsity kept its unbeaten streak, it also dealt its junior varsity side its seventh straight setback.

MHS started out slow as its JV side kept the game close after the first period, 13-8. MHS then put the game away in the second frame, burying the JV squad with a barrage of baskets.

Julie Reyes led MHS varsity’s balanced offense with her 11 points, while Dianne Pablo and Negahr Rastguiy contributed 8 and 6 markers, respectively. Patricia Abantao, Havikka Farro, Gabrielle Race, Alexandria Vergara, Patrisha Echaves, and Jenny Lee scored 2 points or more for MHS varsity.

Martina Ada top-scored for the JV team with her 20 points, built around four 3-pointers. Maria Theresa Dalisay and Alyanna Garon were the only two other scorers for MHS JV, making 2 each.

First Game
MHS V 45 – Reyes 11, Pablo 8, Rastguiy 6, Abantao 4, Farro 4, Race 4, Vergara 4, Echaves 2, Lee 2.

MHS JV 24 – Ada 20, Dalusong 2, Garon 2.

Scoring by quarters: 13-8, 31-12, 41-16, 45-24.

Second Game
KHS 69 – Lizama 22, R. Jones 9, Masayos 6, Mettao 6, Ngirausi 6, Villagomez 6, Agulto 4, Cabrera 4, Lacay 4, J. Jones 2.

SSHS 52 – Alegre 22, Babauta 9, Rogoyawa 7, Alferos 5, Yutuc 4, Dalawampu 3, Pude 2.
