On Monday, Jan. 20, 2020, at about 4:15am, the CNMI Department of Public Safety received a 911 call reporting a theft complaint at a 24-hour business establishment in Garapan, stating that the suspect was still inside the establishment. Police were dispatched to the scene.

At about 4:20am, a patrol unit arrived at the establishment and met with one of the employees, who stated that the suspect had just fled the scene and is hiding in the neighboring building. The witness told police that the suspect was wearing a black shirt and khaki-colored pair of long pants. A few police officers went over to conduct a quick search as another officer questioned the witnesses. After a few minutes, officers found the suspect matching the description hiding in an alley.

Witnesses in the establishment told police that the suspect walked into the establishment and headed straight for the alcohol section, grabbed a bottle of vodka, and began drinking it. The witnesses in the establishment told the suspect that he could not do that. The suspect then walked toward the bag of chips section before opening one bag and fleeing from the store.

When police questioned the suspect, the suspect stated that he had walked around the village, looking for vehicles with unlocked doors, to look for money before going into the store. Officers later found that the suspect in this case was a minor. He was then brought to the Commonwealth Health Center before being transported to the Department of Corrections where he was booked and detained.

The CNMI Department of Public Safety reminds the public to secure your vehicle and to remove any valuables from the vehicle before leaving it unattended. If you see a suspicious individual looking through a vehicle’s windows or trying to get into a vehicle, don’t hesitate and call 911 to report it. If you would like to remain anonymous call the CNMI Crime Stoppers hotline at 234-7272.
