Junior tennis tournament draws out

The draws in the different age group competitions in the 2018 CNMI National Junior Tennis Championships are out with games to start this Saturday at the American Memorial Park tennis courts.

In the boys U14 singles, the field has a 13-player draw with Richard Steele and Daniel Kang getting the Top 2 seeds and drawing byes in the first round. Andy Kim and Isaac Heo are the other seeded players in the division, while Danny Lee, Anthony Gregoire, Joey Hong, Seung Won Lee, Andrew Chun, Brandon Lee, Hyunmin Cho, and Jae Hoon Son complete the draw. Five games in the division will be played in the opening day this weekend.

In the boys U12 singles, David Kwon and Jun Cheol Hwang are seeded first and second and will battle for the division title against Allen Cho, Akash Rai, Ruma Lee, and Nason Wessel. Cho and Rai will meet in the first game in the division, while Lee will duel Wesell in the other match.

For the boys U16 singles crown, it will be a three-person fight among Jonathan Lim, Sam Ryu, and Daniel Heo, while four players—Eugene Kim, Min Seo Lee, Cojiro Kaga, and Andy Lee—will compete for the boys U10 championship. The boys U18 singles also has four players in Jim Min Wo, Seung Jin Paik, Ken Song, and Sean Lee.

In the girls singles, the U12 age group drew the most participants with seven. No. 1 seed Helen Kim got a bye this weekend, while the three opening games will have Serin Chung facing Emily Wang, Seiyul Hong taking on Bomee Park, and Yejin Son challenging No. 2 seed Dana Lee.

In the girls U18, the Top 2 seeds are Isabel Heras and Tania Tan and they will be joined on the draw by Maria Gregoire, Malika Miyawaki, and Coume Kaga. The U10 singles also has five players in No. 1 Irin Chung, No. 2 Anna Kwon, Anne Lee, Savita Sikkel, and Soarin Oh, while the round-robin U14 singles will feature Anika Camacho, J.C. Ferrer, Hye Jin Elliot, and Eva Kim.

The 2018 CNMI National Junior Tennis Championships is the last competition under the Northern Mariana Islands Tennis Association’s calendar of events for the 2017-2018 seasons. Ranking points are at stake in the two-weekend tournament and players needed them to determine their chances of making it to the CNMI National Junior Team that will compete in a couple of regional events this year.
