July is Youth Leadership Month
»Six nominees for DYS exemplary youth leaders
Some 30 staff of the Division of Youth Services under the Department of Community and Cultural Affairs and other partner agencies and groups, along with volunteers, parents, and trainees, witnessed Inos sign the proclamation yesterday at the governor’s conference room on Capital Hill.
“Our young people are our most valuable resource, and among them will emerge our future business, community, and island leaders,” Inos stated in his proclamation.
According to Inos, youth leadership can be achieved successfully if they receive nurturance, support, and training to gain expertise and skills necessary in the decision making process for the planning and implementation of programs and policies affecting the youth.
Yesterday’s event was also an opportunity to introduce the 2012 exemplary youth leader nominees of DYS, who were chosen based on their good moral character, leadership role in the community, involvement in schools and community activities and projects, and their positive influence on peers, siblings, and family environment.
“Unfortunately this year, we only have six nominees but that’s better than nothing. They are here to work with us for a period of one year or they can stay with us longer to help us reach out to other youths in the community,” said DYS acting director Vivian T. Sablan.
This year’s nominees are Josephus Roque H. Aguilar, John Romeo B. Malasarte, Maria Angelica B. Malasarte, Alexa M. San Nicolas, Clea M. San Nicolas, and Marc Christian A. Venus. Aguilar, 16, and Venus, 14, were both nominated by the Basketball Association of Northern Mariana Islands while the Malasarte siblings were nominated by the United Filipino Organization. On the other hand, Alexa San Nicolas was nominated by her school, Chacha Oceanview Jr. High School and Clea San Nicolas by Kagman High School.
Sablan also introduced the DYS trainees under the economic and leadership opportunity for self-sufficiency training program.
Refreshments were served to guests following the proclamation signing.
