MANGILAO, Guam —Rear Adm. Bette Bolivar, commander of Joint Region Marianas, addressed the University of Guam community during the Presidential Lecture Series at the campus in Mangilao on Monday, Oct. 27.

More than 100 people were in attendance as Bolivar spoke about her journey to become a naval officer, and her command philosophy. She also answered questions from the audience regarding current events.

“Regardless of where you are in life, we all are faced with multiple challenges,” she said. “But keep this in mind, how you face those challenges and rise above them is what defines the person you are and the person you will be.”

Bolivar connected with students in the audience by sharing stories of her college years at the U.S. Naval Academy, spending time with family when she can and taking her first selfie.

“As long as you treat people right and remain honest and loyal to the team, there will never be room for failure,” she said. “This is what I’ve shared with my team here in Guam and I think we’re on the right track to ensuring that we have a shared success in creating one Guam and one team.”

Bolivar also encouraged students to apply themselves as active members of the community and to always reach for their goals. “Don’t ever give up because you’ve hit a roadblock in life,” she said. “You’ll never realize your true potential until you face those challenges head-on with true grit and determination. As a member of the Guam community, I am excited to see your accomplishments and the contributions each of you will make to our island.”

UOG president Dr. Robert Underwood presented Bolivar with a certificate of appreciation after her speech and shared his gratitude for her attendance and participation.

“We will never be the same subsequent to the presentation,” he said. “Of course our expectations and our introductions sometimes fail to be fulfilled, but once in a while we actually get an inspirational story about an individual who didn’t just defy the odds, but who redefined the odds making.” (JRM)
