Joeten played their second straight extended game and this time pulled the rug under erstwhile leader Micronesian Brokers, Inc/Anchor, 107-104, in a double overtime curtain-raiser in the 2014 JP World Corp. Customer Appreciation Basketball League last Monday night at the Gillette Multipurpose Gymnasium.

Joeten, which came from an 80-83 overtime loss to Public School System last week, needed two extra periods to beat MBI/Anchor (2-1) and make it to the win column after a 0-2 start. Kevin De Leon and Syl Teregeyo delivered for Joeten in the second extension, as they scored all of the team’s 10 markers with the former knocking in three crucial free throws and a field goal and the latter drilling two field goals and a split charity.

De Leon and Teregeyo held their ground against Aries Cordero and Justin Zapanta, who were the only two players to hit the board for MBI/Anchor. Zapanta canned a triple to start MBI/Anchor’s scoring in the second overtime, while Cordero tallied the team’s last 4 points off a trey and a split free throw.

Ivan Devero and Alex Lauron, who top-scored for MBI/Anchor and Joeten, respectively, with their 41 and 32 points, were non-factors in the second overtime, but made their contribution in the earlier periods. Lauron’s basket sent the game in the first extension, while Devero’s field goal stretched the match to another five minutes.

Devero anchored MBI/Anchor’s offense early as the team lost another gunner in Angelo Fernando. Fernando had to be brought to the hospital midway in the second quarter of the match as he went over the back of a De Leon and had a bad fall. With one MBI/Anchor’s offensive threat out, Joeten turned a 21-17 cushion to a 46-31 halftime edge. Teregeyo, Ferdie Tobias, and Lauron logged 6 points piece in the second period to give Joeten the double-figure margin.

Joeten retained the double-digit lead at the end of the third, 68-58, with Lauron adding 8 more points and De Leon contributing seven after a scoreless first half. However, in the fourth canto, Devero teamed up with White Capalad, Pete Lizama, and Justin Zapanta in bringing MBI/Anchor back into the game and the quarter managed to overhaul Joeten’s lead and force the standoff after the regulation.

The four MBI/Anchor players still scored in the first overtime, while Lauron and De Leon carried the cudgels for Joeten to end the match in another deadlock. De Leon then found a new ally in Teregeyo in the second and final extension to lift Joeten to victory, while Devero and company faded away to halt the team’s two-game winning run.

Joeten 107 – Lauron 32, De Leon 23, Teregeyo 17, Sambile 11, Tobias 11, Kwon 8, Jacob 3.

MBI/Anchor 104 – Devero 41, Capalad 18, Lizama 17, Zapanta 17, Cordero 4, Viola 2, Garcia 2.

Scoring by quarters: 21-17, 46-31, 68-58, 86-86, 97-97 (1OT), 107-104 (2OT).
