Joeten-Kiyu Public Library still closed
For a month and a half now, Saipan’s public library has remained closed after Typhoon Soudelor wreaked havoc on the island. The Joeten-Kiyu Public Library was not spared by Soudelor and suffered several damage.
According to acting library director Erlinda Cabrera Naputi, the library’s roof, ceiling, front circulation counter, Information Technology Center, and the Young Adult areas all sustained damage.
She said that efforts are being made to stop the spread of mold and prevent further damage to books. Some of the books were also affected by humidity.
Naputi said the library will remain closed until the damage is repaired and until power services are restored as they are unable to adequately serve the public without water and power.
The library said it is working closely with the Inos administration to have emergency generators. They are also reaching out to FEMA regarding their damage.
Despite the library being closed, JKPL still found a way to reach out to members of the public who are in need of reading materials.
“In an effort to get reading materials into the hands of the general public, the library is offering free books or book exchange rack, three times a week,” Naputi said.
The free book or book exchange rack is open every Wednesday and Thursday from 9am to 1pm and on Friday from 2pm to 4pm. There is a limit of three books per patron. For more information, call JKPL at 235-7316.
