J.C. Tenorio Enterprises, which operates the Joeten stores on island, recently made a donation to the Saipan Southern High School Manta Ray Band in support of the group’s efforts to raise funds for their London trip next month to perform at the 2012 Summer Olympics.
A check worth $1,000 was presented last June 9 to Manta Ray Band director Will DeWitt and over 40 band members at the Joeten Susupe Shopping Center, where the group provided live entertainment as a treat for customers.
The band performed music by Michael Jackson, Lionel Richie, Duke Ellington, Quincy Jones, Earth Wind and Fire, and Mariana Variations, a new piece based on the melody of the CNMI anthem.
The group’s performance, which was a glimpse of their London performance, also culminated Joeten’s 63rd anniversary festivities which spanned for over a month.
Frannie T. Demapan, marketing manager and buyer, said yesterday that J.C. Tenorio Enterprises has been a big supporter of schools and young talents on island.
The donation, she said, is one way of giving back to the Saipan Southern High School where many of their employees come from.
Although the band is still short of the $250,000 amount they need for the trip, Demapan is optimistic that other community members would throw in any amount to help the group reach their goal.
“We wish them the best of luck and we look forward to seeing them either online or on television playing at the Olympic games,” Demapan told Saipan Tribune.
Demapan added that band director DeWitt expressed his gratitude to the Joeten management in supporting the band’s efforts to represent the CNMI in London.
