Sablan posted a 36 on the front nine and remained steady after the turn with a 39 on the backside for a gross score of 75.

His 8-handicap was adjusted to a field low 67. Sablan topped nine former monthly aces by three strokes and to now has his name added to the club’s perpetual trophy along with other past Ace of Aces champions. He also received a $200 cash prize and the privilege to keep the coveted league trophy for a year.

Sablan also cashed in well on a number of side games, including accruing the most pars with 13, tying John Guerrero for least putts with 26, and tied three other players, who all scratched a birdie apiece on Saturday. Sablan won $25 for each feat.

“The wind was very strong, but I factored it in pretty well overall. I think the real key to my success, however was my putting,” said Sablan in a phone interview yesterday.

Closest to the pin winners included Guerrero on hole No .3, Sherlyn Jones on hole No. 7 and Aces of Aces runner-up Babauta on hole No. 17; nobody won on hole No. 12.

Babauta came in second place with an even 70 net card, Jones netted a 72 for third place, while Guerrero and Ben Jones posted 74s, Diding Hocog marked a 75, Terry Guerrero a 76, Delores Yamagishi and Frank Sablan even 80s, and Joe Tudela an 84.

Other non-ace participants included Manny Blas, Larry Hocog, Dan Quitugua, Joe Sablan Sr., and Felix Sasamoto.

Aside from Sablan’s score, additional scoring details were not made available.

In related news, the club’s January Ace qualifier tees off this Sunday at Kingfisher Golf Links.

The January Ace is then slated for Jan. 29 but the location is still being determined.

The combined net scores of two events per month determine each monthly ace.

There are 23 active Amigos Golf Club of Saipan members and new players are always welcome.

Both men and women compete against one another in a handicap-based net scoring system.
