The Joeten-Kiyu Public Library has launched its 2012 summer reading program called “Dream Big.” The objective of the program is to explore the library as a wealth of resources for the entire family during the summer and all year round, and to retain the love of lifelong reading through various interactive activities and fun learning experiences.

JKPL will be offering four main summer programs in Susupe:

1. THE SUMMER READING CHALLENGE: It is a program that will keep your child’s eyes and mind working by the means of reading different books that are available at the library. Each child is required to read at least 15 books but is allowed to read as many as he/she pleases. So if your child has nothing else to do during this summer, this is the time to register and borrow books, maintain a reading log to monitor progress, and challenge him/herself. On the last day of submission of the reading log the COHL Librarian will verify your reading log to see if you have met your goal. Upon registration your child has to be 6 years old and must have a valid library card and no outstanding library fines.

– Program runs from May 22 to July 24, 2012.

– Last day to submit reading log sheet is July 24, 2012 by 5:00pm.

2. SUMMER PROGRAM ACTIVITIES: Parents need to register their child with the COHL Librarian on what activities are offered throughout the six-week excitement that the library has to offer. So please register and save a seat for your child this summer.

– Sign – ins run from June 19 to July 27, 2012.

– Time: 10am to 11:30am, Tuesday to Saturday.

3. GRAND FINALE: The Grand Finale has always been our exciting part of the Summer Reading Program. It is the time to congratulate and show off our top readers for the summer! Best of all they will receive a trophy and certificate for completing the program.

– Grand Finale on July 28, 2012.

– 10am at the Joeten-Kiyu Public Library Children of Our Homeland Cultural Center.

4. UKULELE CLASS: Learning ukulele has become very popular with many students as they learn the parts of the ukulele, how to strum properly, and play music. Be sure that you provide your own ukulele, a three-ring binder and protective sheets to store your song sheets. Register now as there are only limited spaces. The minimum enrollment would be 20 students and the maximum is 40 students.

– Registration ongoing and ends June 8, 2012.

– Basic Level course runs June 12 to July 25, 2012, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 2pm – 3pm. Tuition cost: $40

– Level 2 course runs July 10 to August 2, 2012, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 3:15pm – 4:15pm. Tuition cost: $40

– Tuition is per course level (for eight sessions) per student.
