The Joeten-Kiyu, Tinian, and Rota public libraries are joining libraries across the U.S. in celebrating National Library Week this April.
The occasion, first sponsored by the American Library Association in 1958, seeks to honor all the contributions of the country’s libraries and librarians and promote library use and support in the communities.
Here in the Commonwealth, the observance of the National Library Week will be from April 12 to 17 with the theme, “You belong @ your library.”
The Joeten-Kiyu Public Library said in a statement that libraries help level the playing field by making print and digital information affordable, available, and accessible to the public.
“As executive director, I am most privileged to declare that NLW is celebrated to promote the timeless value and vital role that public libraries play in filling the growing lifelong learning needs and varying interests of our community, especially as we are increasingly becoming more relevant and responsive in these challenging times where we are the neutralizers of our diverse communities,” John Oliver Gonzales told Saipan Tribune.
Gonzales said the occasion will be celebrated by having open houses to illustrate the services they offer and the collections they have. The open houses will be highlighted by a slideshow presentation featuring Joeten-Kiyu Public Library’s 20-year history.
Other activities include game trivia, Read-Aloud, Story Hours, and Arts & Crafts.
Gonzales noted that the Joeten-Kiyu Public Library also joins the Public School System and the Board of Education, which proclaimed April as National School Library Month.
