JKPL to offer free innovative tech classes
The Joeten Kiyu Public Library is hosting free six-session innovative technology classes starting May 20.
The classes, called “Learning with Technology,” will be held at the public library from Tuesday through Thursday from 4pm to 6pm.
Rosalyn Ajoste, the library’s technical services librarian, said that the class will be taught by Gary Dubrall for eighth to ninth grade students.
The class size is limited to the first 10-20 students and requirements to attend the class are a school ID and a touch-screen tablet with WiFi and note-taking capabilities.
“Registration is ongoing for this entire week and interested participants may register with Mr. Dubrall in person or email,” Ajoste said.
She said Dubrall developed the idea for the course “out of a personal desire to help the youth learn better by using technology.”
“The goal is to show 14- and 15-year-olds how to learn using YouTube and Google for all their schoolwork, how to take paperless notes and set up a class community on Google+, Skype, or one of their choosing,” Dubrall said.
Ajoste noted that Dubrall feels that today’s students are not getting what they need or want.
“If we don’t keep these kids engaged, someone or something else will. You need touch screen tablets or laptops. Old technology just doesn’t work anymore,” Dubrall said.
