The Joeten-Kiyu Public Library announced and awarded last Dec. 29 the winners of its art contest.

The contest was divided into two brackets, separated by ages of 12 to 14 and 15 to 17.

The top 3 winners of both divisions won gift certificates from Green Flash comics, National Office Supply, and Bestseller.

The Division 12 to 14’s first place winner, Rownel Jody Coloma, won a $50 Green Flash Comics gift certificate along with a $25 gift certificate from National Office Supply. Coloma said he wanted to inspire others, just as he was inspired by the folk tale, Okkodu’s Clever Trick for a Beautiful Girl.

“I just wanted to show others that you can choose a local art piece instead of [a foreign art piece] to win something,” said Coloma.

Grace Christian Academy’s Conrad Bao, 12, won third place with his piece. Bao won free movie tickets for two at the Regal Saipan Megaplex 7.

Bao said the inspiration for his piece came from his Chinese roots.

“Next year is the Year of the Rooster,” said Bao. “I also see this tree near my house that has chicks on its branches, so that is where my inspiration came from. I used paint, pencil and pen for my piece.”

For Division 15 to 17, Ruth Park came in first, earning herself a $50 gift certificate from Green Flash Comics and $25 gift certificate from National Office Supply. Coming in at second was Sarah Jean Mangubat and Elizabeth Jones came in at third place.
