Jimin win away from taking men’s singles title

Top seed Jimin Woo advanced to the men’s singles finals of the 2021 White Coconut Tennis Classic set at the American Memorial Park today.

This, after the 17-year-old senior at Saipan International School vanquished Andy Kim in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0 yesterday at the same tennis venue.

Woo’s opponent in the championship will be No. 2 seed Colin Ramsey after he got the better of fourth seed Sam Ryu, 7-6, 6-2, also yesterday.

Asked what he think his chances against Ramsey is in the finals, a confident Woo said nothing less than a championship will be an acceptable result for his.

“Because I have never lost to him,” he said.

In the women’s singles, top seed Hyejin Elliot has so far won two of her matches and will play second seed and good friend Serin Chung this morning. Elliot has beaten Gillian Lucero, 6-3, 6-0, and Jeanne Bracken, 6-0, 6-0. Chung has so far dispatched Bracken, 6-0, 6-0.

In the boys singles 16, unseeded Simon Tang currently is at 2-0 with wins over No. 2 seed Wataru Kadokura (3-6, 6-4, 10-7) and Jack Linden (6-0, 6-1). No. 1 June Yu is at 1-0 after beating DK Kang (4-0, retired). Kadokura earlier beat Kang (6-3, 7-6 (9)) and Kang won over Linden (6-1, 6-1).

Top seed Irin Chung and second see Hoo Wang will duke it out in the finals of the girls singles 14. Chung advanced with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep of Hannah Chae, while Wang had a walkover win over Anna Kwon.

In the boys singles 14, Henry Choi and Nason Wessel and Yutaka Kadokura and Siwoo Lee were supposed to play each other in the semifinals yesterday, but scores are still pending.

Ditto for the semis pairings of Ryan Choi and Ian Chae and Jihun Park and Matthew Hwang in the boys singles 12.

In the boys singles 10, Michael Jeon will play Cody Park in the finals after the former won via walkover against Daniel Kang and the former beat Antonio Heras, 6-1.

Stella Choi is so far undefeated in the girls singles 10 following 6-0 wins over Vivian Chung and Jenna Pascual. Emma Lang is also perfect with wins over Chung (6-1) and Pascual (6-0).

In the women’s singles 40, Marivic Dunlop has defeated Elizabeth Culp, 4-6, 6-3, 10-4, and Sarka Glajchova, 6-1, 6-0. Yuko Kumada is at 1-1 with a walkover win over Glajchova and a 2-6, 3-6 loss to Culp. Culp is at 2-1 with wins over Glajchova (walkover) and the aforementioned victory over Kumada.

The 35-team mixed doubles field had its semifinals yesterday, but results are still pending as of press time.
