Of the expected graduates, 280 will receive undergraduate degrees and 59 will receive graduate degrees. The spring 2015 commencement ceremonies will be held at 2pm on Sunday, May 24, 2015, at the UOG Calvo Field House.
“This commencement will be amongst the most memorable in UOG’s history,” said UOG president Dr. Robert Underwood. “A record number of graduates will receive their diplomas; the creativity of Frank Rabon will be recognized; a native son-entertainer named David Cruz will make a return visit; and Jim Obergefell, a historic litigant in the Supreme Court marriage equality case, will be telling his story. It is great time to be at UOG.”
The commencement speakers will be Jim Obergefell and David Cruz III. A resident of Cincinnati, Ohio, Obergefell’s landmark case on same-sex marriage is currently being heard by the U.S. Superme Court. Obergefell v. Hodges challenges a state’s refusal to recognize same-sex marriages from other jurisdictions and a state’s refusal to license same-sex marriage.
David Cruz III is a former Guam resident who is a cast member and Matchmaker on the hit Bravo TV show, The Millionaire Matchmaker. He is the founder and creative director of Finding-Cupid.com, a lifestyle website dedicated to all things love. The success of his website led to the development of Finding Cupid Radio which airs on the Universal Broadcasting Network in Hollywood. The radio show features Cruz as a host and showcases celebrity guests, writers, and singers.
The university will also be conferring an honorary Master of Creative and Traditional Micronesian Knowledge to Francisco “Frank” B. Rabon for his work as the director of Guma Taotao Tano’ and his contributions to Chamorro dance.
Attendance for UOG spring 2015 commencement ceremonies is by ticket only. Graduating students are encouraged to pick up their tickets at the Admissions office and to call 735-2214 for more information.
