Eunae “Sophia” Jang won her second CNMI Women’s Golf Association tournament ever after topping the January edition last Jan. 22 at the west course of the Laolao Bay Golf & Resort.

The 41-year-old shot a net score of 73 after a gross of 96. The 23-handicapper went 50 in the front nine before returning to the clubhouse with a 46 in the back nine.

Jang said CWGA was fortunate to hold the monthly golf tournament last Jan. 22, a Sunday, after inclement weather postponed it a week before.

“The tournament had been postponed for a week because it rained for several days. Fortunately, the weather was really nice and sunny on the day of the game. It rained so much last week that I was worried about the greens and the fairways, but it was well managed.”

The South Korea native, however, admitted that even though she won the January tourney it didn’t mean it was all smooth sailing during the competition.

“My ball went into the wet bunker twice. I had a lot of difficulty getting out of the bunker, but I finished the game safely. I enjoyed playing golf with my grateful CGWA team and I am so happy to be the ace of the new year.  I want to share this joy with my loving family,” she said.

Jang said she took up the sport in 2006 “because I was interested in it.” She also dedicated her January win “to my beloved family and Mr. Lee, who always gave me encouragement and support.”

Lee is Dong Kyu Lee, Jang’s longtime golf coach.

Finishing second to Jang is Sherlyn Jones with her net 75 (gross 91, 46-45), while completing the Top 3 was Doll Yamagishi after she fired a net 76 (gross 96, 49-47).

The rest of the CGWA members that took part in the January tourney, with their net scores in parentheses, were Chang Eun Ae (86), Nana Lui (78), Terry Guerrero (81), and Lorraine Babauta (86).

The club continues to look for new members as the new season continues. For those interested in becoming a member of CWGA or for more information, contact CWGA president Yuko Togawa at 287-9856, vice president Lorraine Babauta at 287-0621, or treasurer Lou Kim at 783-7317.
