Iwo Jima presentation at American Memorial Park
The public is invited to attend an in-depth presentation about the Battle of Iwo Jima. The presentation will be on Saturday, March 8, 2014, from 1pm to 3pm, at the American Memorial Park Theater.
National Park Service historian James Oelke Farley will give an overview of the battle that occurred 69 years ago during World War II. He will also discuss controversial topics regarding the battle with the audience.
The Battle of Iwo Jima began on Feb. 19, 1945, and lasted 36 days. Nearly 30,000 people died in just over a month of brutal fighting to control the island, which is only four miles long and two miles wide.
“We are extremely excited to share this presentation with Saipan’s residents. We annually welcome veterans of this battle as they prepare to return to the black sands of Iwo Jima. As part of an educational symposium for the veterans, family members of the deceased, and military historians the day before they fly to the island, this presentation is given annually and focuses upon photographs, maps, and written documents to reveal the battle to the audience,” said Guam-based Farley.
