IT&E Light, Mawati win debuts in One Pacific caging

IT&E Light and Mawati prevailed in the first two matches played in the 2019 One Pacific Promotional Basketball League last Sunday at the Civic Center Court in Susupe.
IT&E saw action in the curtain-raiser of the Tsingtao Beer-sponsored competition and defeated Docomo Pacific, 76-68, while Mawati routed Light & Salt in the second match, 78-53.
It was a come-from-behind victory for IT&E, as Docomo dominated the first half of the opener, leading by as much as 13, 23-10. Ton Diaz scored 10 points, while Shane Deleon Guerrero and Billy Grow added 6 apiece in the first quarter to hand Docomo a baker’s dozen lead.
IT&E faced an early deficit, as it was held to three field goals in the opening quarter before getting its rhythm in the second. IT&E then managed to bring the lead down to single digit at the break, 32-36, after John Nuguid capped the first half with back-to-back triples.
In the second half, IT&E continued to rally and by the end of the third, it stole the lead, 56-51. Nuguid was still the main contributor in IT&E’s comeback bid, as he knocked in three triples in the third period, while three of his teammates combined for 10 more markers in the penultimate frame.
IT&E went on to keep the driver’s seat in the final quarter to win its debut in the 12-team field. Nuguid, who was scoreless in the first canto, finished with 19 points, while Aaron Pamintuan chipped in 12.
In the second game, Mawati led right from the get-go en route to the 25-point winning margin.
Olan Tengco’s guns were blazing in Mawati’s first game, as he fired six triples and scored 22 points. Frank Ferrer and Arjay Nonato chipped in 12 apiece, while Jerome Directo contributed double figures, too with his 11.
