Islander Rent A Car demolished AK Toyota Wheels, 96-57, in their Open Division match in the United Filipino Organization IT&E 2019 Basketball League last Sunday at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.
Islander went straight for the kill early, hammering its opponent right in the first quarter, as it scored 25 points against AK Toyota’s 6. Mac Mintac led the way for Islander in the opening canto, as he logged 8 points. He also got a lot of help from his teammates with Elgene Mangali contributing 5 points, John Patrana and Joseph Torres adding 4 points each, and Jetzen Jandoc and John Aticapua chipping in 2 apiece.
AK Toyota fell behind early, as it had only three players making it to the board in the first quarter and none of them drilled more than one basket in a lackluster showing in the opening canto.
AK Toyota picked up its scoring a bit in the second and third periods, but still, it was no match to the gunners of Islander. After three periods, Islander’s lead ballooned to 47, 68-21.
With the huge lead, Islander slowed down a bit in the final canto, giving AK Toyota the opportunity to pile up points and have a better finish after a slump in the first period.
Still, Islander earned a big 39-point winning margin in its debut after running a balanced offense. Mintac led six Islander players with double figures after scoring 18. Pastrana, Mangali, and Torres added 14 apiece, while Ken Viray and Jandoc recorded 13 and 10, respectively.
Austin Camacho was the only player to post twin digits in scoring for AK Toyota after firing 22 points.
