Island Manpower nips Pelicans
Island Manpower outgunned the Pelicans in a shootout, eking out a 125-124 overtime win in the first game in the 2014 DL Corp. Invitational Basketball League last Thursday at the Gillette Multipurpose Gymnasium.
Cecilio Bisana top-scored for Island Manpower with his 32 points, but it was the triples of Ed Panglinan in overtime that lifted the team to the close win. Pangilinan knocked in two treys in the extension period, including the go-ahead triple. The Island Manpower shooter also finished in twin digits with his 22 markers, while Jun Tabora was the third player on the team to record 20-plus points with his 24.

Bisana outgunned the entire Pelican’s crew, who registered only 13 points after exploding for 33 and 38 points in the second and third quarters, respectively. Trevor Ogumoro led the Pelicans’ losing cause, firing 34 markers, but he was held to only two free throws and had no field goal in the extra five minutes of play. The Pelicans dropped to a 1-3 record.
In the second game, Docomo Pacific handed Shocker Nation its first loss in four games after cruising to a 95-79 victory.
Docomo (2-3) was still down by a deuce after the third frame, 63-65, when it caught Shocker Nation flatfooted in the pivotal final canto. Docomo more than doubled up Shocker Nation in scoring in the fourth period, 32-15, to waltz to the 16-point win.
James Villacrusis anchored Docomo’s fourth-quarter attack, drilling 16 of his 30 points. Tony Diaz also sizzled in the fourth, opening the quarter with back-to-back triples and adding eight points to top-score for Docomo with 31.
Meanwhile, in last Sunday’s double-header, Puerto Rico Bento and San Antonio won their respective games.
Puerto Rico barged into the win column after going 0-4, following a 109-100 victory over the winless Olivos Team (0-4). Six players scored in double figures for Puerto Rico with Joel Saplan leading his squad with his 30 markers. Kelvin Fitial chipped in 17, Patrick Salalila had 16, while John Jugos added 13. Chris Lansang and Stanley Tuwon contributed 12 and 11, respectively, to complete Puerto Rico’s balance offense.
Puerto Rico took control of the game in the third quarter, as it posted 31 big points to turn a 54-56halftime deficit to an 85-74 advantage. Puerto Rico kept its safe distance with Saplan’s guns still blazing, adding 12 more points in the final period.
