The Woman’s Affairs Office, in collaboration with CNMI Women’s Association, brought women from the many ethnicities in the CNMI together at the Pedro P. Multi-Purpose Center in Susupe last Saturday as part of the celebration of International Women’s Day.

The celebration was composed of three events on the same day: The first was the recognition of 12 inspiring women and their success stories, as presented by first lady Diann Torres and Wella Palacios. The second event consisted of all women from different cultures and ethnicities coming together to share their culture, food cuisines, and entertainment at the multi-purpose center. The third event was a roadside waving, composed of all the women who attended Saturday’s event.

According to WAO’s Shirley Camacho-Ogumoro, the event, which featured a variety of foods that were unique, tasty, and homemade, drew more people than expected. There were different booths representing various ethnicities in the CNMI, including one that featured the Japan Consulate and another featuring the Korean community.

“To all women, especially mothers, you are the role model to your daughters,” said Camacho-Ogumoro. “You are also an inspiration to your little sisters [and nieces]. Keep inspiring them to be a positive role model.”

Camacho-Ogumoro added that all women should always take care of each other and if you see something wrong, say something or tell an adult.

Annamae Adaza, community relations coordinator of WAO, said that having the event coordinated was a tiring process, but it was all worth it in end.

“If your heart and your passion is there, you can do anything,” she said. “It may be time-consuming but to do the work and help out, it’ll be really rewarding,” she said.

The three major sponsors of the event were 2020 Census, Bridge Capital LLC, and Pacifica Insurance Underwriters, Inc., in addition to other sponsors, donors, and supporters.
